This amazing installation was designed by Robert J. Lang for Conservation International. Harrison Ford, longtime board member of Conservation International, garnered support for forest protection ahead of the UN General Assembly and Copenhagen climate negotiations. President Barrat Jagdeo of Guyana also gave an impassioned speech, calling for the support and awareness of preserving rainforests.

The program ended with a dramatic destruction of the origami rainforest with chainsaws and blades, to illustrate the fragility of the rainforests and the speed at which they are detroyed.

Robert asked me to assist him with the task of folding the monumental figures for the rainforest. The first day, we folded the trunk of the ‘Tree of Life’. This was followed by 5 major branches and some 20 ‘branchlets’. The second day, we continued to fold medium size trees on location at Greeley Square, where members of Origami USA were on hand to teach simple origami animals and flowers to the public. Origami USA members had previously folded the 1,500 leaves needed to complete the origami rainforest. Robert and I also folded a dozen rainforest birds and animals.

The forest was completed in 2 days.

It was destroyed in 30 seconds.

For more on Conservation International, log on to
www.conservation.org
